Latitude dependence of zonal plasma drifts obtained from dual-site airglow observations
[1] All-sky imagers located at Tucumán, Argentina (26.9 S, 65 W, 14.2 S dip latitude), and Arequipa, Perú (16.5 S, 71.5 W, 2.7 S dip latitude), are used to track 630 nm airglow depletion motions in the first use of multisite airglow imagers for studies of low-latitude plasma dynamics. A new image analysis technique yields a consistent determination of nighttime zonal plasma drifts from all-sky ...
متن کاملLongitudinal dependence of middle and low latitude zonal plasma drifts measured by DE-2
We used ion drift observations from the DE-2 satellite to study for the first time the longitudinal variations of middle and low latitude F region zonal plasma drifts during quiet and disturbed conditions. The quiet-time middle latitude drifts are predominantly westward; the low latitude drifts are westward during the day and eastward at night. The daytime quiet-time drifts do not change much w...
متن کاملElectron plasma orbits from competing diocotron drifts.
The perpendicular dynamics of a pure electron plasma column are investigated when the plasma spans two Penning-Malmberg traps with noncoinciding axes. The plasma executes noncircular orbits described by competing image-charge electric-field (diocotron) drifts from the two traps. A simple model is presented that predicts a set of nested orbits in agreement with observed plasma trajectories.
متن کاملRadar studies of mid-latitude ionospheric plasma drifts
We use incoherent scatter radar measurements from Millstone Hill and Saint Santin to study the midlatitude F region electrodynamic plasma drifts during geomagnetically quiet and active periods. We present initially a local time, season, and solar flux dependent analytical model of the quiet time zonal and meridional ExB drifts over these stations. We discuss, for the first time, the Saint Santi...
متن کاملEquatorial F-region plasma depletion drifts: latitudinal and seasonal variations
The equatorial ionospheric irregularities have been observed in the past few years by different techniques (e.g. ground-based radar, digisonde, GPS, optical instruments, in situ satellite and rocket instrumentation), and its time evolution and propagation characteristics can be used to study important aspects of ionospheric dynamics and thermosphere-ionosphere coupling. At present, one of the m...
